Sport is one of the fastest ways to reach people in the UAE. Football, motorsport, golf, tennis, cricket, cycling and combat sports all draw large crowds and big online audiences, and the country hosts world-class events every month of the season. National companies such as ADNOC, title partner of the UAE Pro League until 2029, use sports sponsorship to build their brands, and international brands use it to enter the market.

But a logo on a shirt does not guarantee results. This guide explains, step by step, how to plan, choose, negotiate and measure a sports sponsorship in the UAE.

‍

Step 1: Decide what you want to achieve

Start with your business goal, not with the sport you like. Common goals are building awareness with a new audience or when entering the UAE market; selling more through promotions, sign-ups, leads or app downloads; hospitality, with tickets and boxes to meet clients and partners; content, with stories from athletes and clubs for your social media; and reputation and community, through youth academies, grassroots sport and health.

Write down one to three goals you can measure. Then define your audience. The UAE audience is very mixed: Emiratis, large expat communities from South Asia, Europe, the Arab world and beyond, and millions of tourists. Each group follows different sports, so your audience decides your sport.

‍

Step 2: Set a realistic budget

A sponsorship budget has two parts: the rights fee (what you pay the club, event or athlete) and the activation budget (what you spend to bring the deal to life). Many experienced sponsors spend at least as much on activation as on the rights. Also plan for content production, tickets and hospitality, staff or agency time, and measurement. A smaller deal that is well activated almost always beats a bigger deal that is not.

‍

Step 3: Choose the right property

In sponsorship, the club, event, athlete or venue you sponsor is called a "property". In the UAE you can choose from:

Clubs and leagues: UAE Pro League clubs are growing their partner programmes. Al Wasl now has 14 partners, and Al Jazira signed New Balance as kit partner.

Events: Dubai and the UAE attract some of the biggest sports events in the world, from the Formula 1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, cricket, UFC and boxing to the Abu Dhabi Championship in golf, the Dubai Marathon and the UAE Tour in cycling.

Athletes and influencers: personal, authentic and good for content. See our Talent Representation service.

Media and content: sports TV, streaming, podcasts and live-score apps. See our Media Marketing service.

Grassroots and academies: lower cost and a strong community story.

Before you choose, ask: Does their audience match mine? Can I be the only brand in my category? Which rights exactly do I get? Who else sponsors them, and do I fit next to those brands? Does this rights holder deliver what it promises?

‍

Step 4: Check the UAE rules

Sponsorship in the UAE is well organised, but there are rules to respect:

Dubai event permits: in Dubai, every sports event needs a permit from the Dubai Sports Council, event advertising needs its approval, and the name "Dubai" can only be used in an event name with its prior approval. The organiser handles this, but make sure it is in place before you sign.

Athletes and influencers: since 1 February 2026, anyone posting paid or promotional content in the UAE needs an Advertiser Permit from the UAE Media Council. Content breaches can be fined from AED 5,000 up to AED 1 million. If your deal includes social media posts by athletes, check their permit.

Content and values: advertising must respect UAE values and culture. Plan Arabic versions of your campaigns where you reach Arabic-speaking audiences.

Sector rules: some sectors have their own rules. Gaming brands, for example, must be licensed by the GCGRA. Read our guide UAE iGaming Licence (GCGRA) Explained.

This guide is general information, not legal advice. For the legal side, you do not need to worry: we put you in touch with the UAE lawyers we know and work with, so you can rely on us for that support too and focus on your brand.

‍

Step 5: Negotiate the right rights

The price matters, but the details in the contract matter more. Check that your contract covers:

Category exclusivity: no competitor in your sector gets the same rights.

Visibility: exact logo positions on kit, boards, screens, tickets and digital channels.

Content rights: use of player images, club logos and match footage in your own campaigns.

Hospitality: number of tickets, boxes and meet-and-greets per season.

Activation rights: fan zones, sampling, competitions and promotions at the venue.

Make-goods: what you receive if events are cancelled or TV coverage changes.

Exit and renewal: termination clauses, and first right to renew.

‍

Step 6: Activate the sponsorship

Activation is what turns a logo into results. Good activation ideas in the UAE include content series with players, fan zones and competitions on match days, hospitality evenings for clients, retail or app promotions linked to results, and community programmes with youth academies. Plan the activation calendar before the season starts and give it its own budget and owner.

‍

Step 7: Measure and decide on renewal

Measure against the goals from step 1. Useful measures are brand awareness before and after the campaign, media exposure, social media reach and engagement, leads and sales tracked with promo codes or links, and the deals that came from hospitality. Review halfway through the season, so you can adjust in time and enter renewal talks with facts.

‍

Common mistakes to avoid

The most common mistakes are buying a logo without an activation budget; choosing a sport because you like it, not because your audience follows it; signing before checking approvals and permits; having no exit clause and no clear list of rights; and not measuring, so you cannot prove the value at renewal time.
